Psilocybin is an experimental treatment. We don’t know whether psilocybin is a safe and effective treatment for depression yet. This is why we are doing the research. Your depression could improve, could worsen, or it could stay the same.
The trial takes place at King’s College Hospital in south London. If you live far away consider carefully whether you can travel to us here. You may need to stay in a hotel. We cannot refund you for hotel expenses or excessive travel costs.
The minimum amount of time you will be in the study is 7 weeks, however for most people it will be longer. You could be in this study for up to 26 weeks. You can go about your daily life in-between visits, but if you are going on holiday or going to be away for another reason for an extended period then please tell us as far in advance as you can.
We can’t see you at the weekend. All study visits will take place on a weekday during usual working hours. If you work or have other responsibilities, then consider carefully if you can fit in with the schedule of visits described in the participant information sheet.
This is a placebo-controlled study. You have a 50% chance of receiving psilocybin or placebo (a dummy pill). However, regardless of whether you get psilocybin or placebo first time around, you may opt in to a further part of the study where everyone will receive a dose of psilocybin, unless there is a reason for you not to. For example, we may not offer you the further part of the study if your depression gets much worse or if you experience a serious side effect or a significant upset in your life.
You will need to consent to us contacting a trusted friend or relative to discuss your involvement in the trial and to ask them questions about how you are from their perspective.
You will need to consent to us having full access to your medical records from your GP and/or other health care provider.
Psilocybin will only be given to you in the hospital. You will not be given any psilocybin to take home.
The minimum number of visits to the hospital is 8, however depending on your circumstances, we may ask you to visit us more frequently. Some people may need to visit us on 12 or more occasions.
If we accept you onto the trial, we will help you to stop taking your current medications for depression, if you are currently taking them. You should consider carefully whether this is the right thing for you and ask us, people close to you and/or your local doctor if you aren’t sure.
